A Vatican postage stamp of € 1.10 in a joint issue with Italy will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the Bambino Gesù Paediatric Hospital in Rome. The Bambino Gesù was the first Italian paediatric hospital to be instituted thanks to the generous efforts of Duchess Arabella Salviati in the second half of the 19th century when in Rome, as in the rest of Italy, young children were cared for in the same hospital wards as adults. From that time onwards he and all succeeding popes supported the activities of the hospital in protecting the health of children with many personally visiting them in the hospital. In 1985 the Bambino Gesù Hospital received the Italian IRCCS recognition for its excellence in hospital care and clinical research, while also receiving international recognition for its clinical research work, trials for discovering cures for illness, thereby establishing itself as a worldwide center for excellence.
