The Philatelic Office of the Vatican celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Poland with a € 1.15 postage stamp in a joint issue with Poland. The first diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Poland go back to 1555 when the first resident papal representative with the rank of nunzio arrived in Warsaw. At the beginning of 1600 the first concordat between the Holy See and Poland was signed, but in 1795 Poland ceased to exist following three major territorial divisions by neighboring nations until 1918 when it finally regained its independence. Diplomatic relations were re-established then in 1919. The postage stamp design by Stefano Morri depicts Pope Benedict XV, under whose pontificate the restoration of diplomatic relations took place, and Marshall Józef Piłsudski, considered the greatest architect of the reconquest of Poland’s independence after the First World War.
